Ridge Spring Town
Square now has an old fashion water tower.
It is up and looks great.
Mentioned to Joe Cal Watson about my cousins taking a dip in the old
water tower. He said he did not do that but
his brother did. Small World!!!!
Cones Meats has a wonderful
reputation of fresh meats, delicious sausage, chili without beans, butchers who
will cut meat to your specification and wonderful frozen vegetables and so much
more. Don't forget the hash. Bobby Cone
finally sold the business and the recipes to Brent and Melissa Gilliland. Brent has been working for Bobby for 15 years
and knows the business. Bobby is
semiretired and will be seen at the store often. I had to ask about t he recipes for the
sausage and the hash. I have relatives
who love for me to visit for I always bring Cone's Sausage up to 15 pounds already
wrapped. Yes I do freeze it before a start
on the road. Bobby will be missed but
the tradition continues.

hit 2020 full out!! The month of January the members collected for the Big Red
Box (BRB) items for to be used as prizes for BINGO games held at the Saluda
Senior Center. We understand these games are full of spirit and competition,
all fun of course. We hope the items we delivered will be well received. Some
items collected were: 2 liter sodas all flavors, cross word puzzles, books as
well as adult coloring books, personal hygiene products, fruit cups, popcorn
and candy. The Center stated that volunteers are always welcome and needed.
Hopefully this will be the beginning of a loving relationship.
February means Valentine Day, Ground
Hog Day but early in the month, Super Bowl Sunday. During the month of February
the BRB will be collecting soups of all sorts and other nonperishable items,
These will be delivered to Helpful Hands to be used in their food pantry. If
you like to donate, leave items on the porch of the Family Life Center or the
Church. A member will make sure your donations makes it to the BRB. Let’s try
and make sure our neighbors here on The Ridge have food to eat. Church Service
is at 11 a.m. unless otherwise noted. RSUMC is on Face Book. Check out our
page.

On Mon., Feb. 3, the community, students,
alumni, and others joined together to say good-bye to the old RSM High School. Demolition
could start as early as this week, so we wanted everyone to have the
opportunity to visit the hallowed halls one more time. Though some changes have
been made over the years, the school still has its two hallways and cafeteria
and library where many, many people have made precious memories over the years.
I think it is especially bittersweet for my dear friend, cousin, &
colleague Kelly Bedenbaugh. She
graduated from RSM in 1986. After graduating from Columbia College in 1990, she was hired at her alma mater to teach
English. She has taught at RSM High her entire career, always teaching English
but also teaching other classes, sponsoring clubs, being department chair, and
even coaching cheerleaders at different times in her career. Kelly is on her 30th
year in education, and we’re not letting her go just yet! She is enjoying her
new classroom right beside mine, and we both love the view outside the windows.
Monica Jones, who
teaches English and Secondary Literacy, also graduated from RSM High, and Kelly
taught her! Monica has been teaching at RSM for a few years now and is
completely devoted to our Trojans. She also coaches our step team. Coach Mark Rodgers also graduated from
RSM in 1988. In 2002, he was hired as the Trojans’ head football coach and led
the Trojans to their first Upper-State Championship in 2006. He taught PE and
coached football, baseball, and track until 2012. He’s hoping to take a final
walk down those old halls as well. I have personally been at RSM High for the
past 16 years, and I can’t imagine myself anywhere else. My oldest daughter and
my son-in-law graduated from RSM. So you see, our community is interwoven with
family, friends, and a supportive community. We are very grateful. Soon, we’ll
have a special event to celebrate the opening of the new school and will let
everyone know!

RSM High: What a
great first week we had in our new school! The students have figured out their
paths to various classes and are enjoying the updated facilities and
technology. The library is still the most beautiful place in the school, but
everything is beautiful.
Congratulations to 2020-2021 Teacher of the Year Monica Smith (guidance counselor),
and GEM Felicia Key (accommodations
lab & virtual school proctor). They will represent RSM in the district
competition. Both of these ladies are invaluable to RSM High and are wonderful
role models and caretakers of our students. Trojan Pride!
The Senior Beta Club and National English Honor Society will hold an induction ceremony on Tues., Feb. 18, at 6 pm
in the new media center. These two honors organizations provide service to our
school and community with individual and group projects. Members must maintain
high grades and show good moral character. By induction, the both clubs will
have members in grades 9-12. Sponsors are Josie Rodgers and Kelly Bedenbaugh.
The Beta Club is
collecting items for goodie bags to distribute to an Aiken nursing home Feb.
17. Items needed include nonskid socks & slippers, shampoo/conditioner,
toothpaste, body wash, combs/brushes, mouth wash, stuffed animals, happy cards,
lotion, deodorant, tissues, after shave, drawing pads, lip balms, puzzle books,
adult coloring books, colored pencils, and more. Contact Josie Rodgers or Kelly
Bedenbaugh about how to donate.
Review from David
Marshall James: "Blue Moon" by Lee Child
Jack Reacher = vintage vigilante
justice: Batman sans cape; Robin Hood sans Brazilian-wax tunic; all of
the above, sans tights.
Hey, Reacher even rides the bus, which is
where we find him as the curtain rises on his latest adventure. The
vigilant vigilante spots a would-be thief eyeballing a fattened bank envelope
protruding from the jacket pocket of a senior citizen, across the aisle on the
bus.
Skipping ahead, Reacher has arrived in the
senior's home city, which is never named, and which is basically just another
layover in the ceaseless peregrinations of our tights-less pro-tagger.
After Reacher thwarts the inevitable robbery
attempt, he unspools the senior's back story. The gentleman has been
toting the ludicrously large bankroll because he owes a stratospheric sum to a
local loan shark.
Indeed, the older man has been out-of-town
and back on the bus, seeking the best price for his classic auto.
Meanwhile, most of his remaining worldly possessions are either mortgaged,
sold, or pawned.
When Reacher discovers that his newfound
acquaintance-- and his wife-- have been paying off their adult daughter's
monstrous medical bills for a catastrophic illness, he becomes righteously
indignant. When he learns that a corporate greedmeister is responsible
for the cancellation of the daughter's insurance, he goes ballistic.
Accent on the first syllable.
Being a onetime U.S. Army military
policeman, Reacher can punch and kick and pull a trigger with the best of
them. Moreover, he thinks, analyzes before he acts on behalf of truth,
justice, and what used to be the American Way.
Author Lee Child serves up villains galore
in his action-packed story, including rival gangster mobs that rule the city in
question. The loan shark is unsurprisingly tied up with one of the mobs;
hence, Reacher's entree into the city's criminal battleground. And to
think it all started with a pickpocket, back on the bus.
With his Robin Hood DNA, Reacher is cobbles
together his own band of Merry Men (plus one maiden fair) to bring down the
warring mobs, one of which is now employing the aforementioned greedmeister,
who caused the woes of the elderly couple and their daughter.
The plot results in considerable
entertainment in the vein of "the bad guys get theirs," Reacher
style. Which is to say that the bodies begin piling up, sometimes
literally, as in Act Five of "Hamlet." Nevertheless, the novel
offers more of a morality play than a tragedy. Is Reacher more moral than
those he considers dispensable?
Argue as you may on that topic. In the
meantime, the vintage vigilante can sit next to us on the bus any old day.
Harriet's Garden Tips: Taking a soil sample to Clemson extension
this week. Going to have a new vegetable garden. Twenty years ago it cost $5.00 and the price
has gone up to $6.00. I like that
inflation rate. Never work the soil when it is wet. Good time to pull weeds though. Have you seen
your bulbs poking their heads up.
Fertilize after they bloom. February
is the month to prune roses, but not necessarily the old fashion roses. These can be shaped up whenever needed. It is a good time to shape them up now.
