Josie Rodgers: Last week, I attended the CERRA (Center for Education, Recruitment, Retention, & Advancement) Fall Renewal Conference at Myrtle Beach. These conferences are the best I have ever participated in throughout my 24-year teaching career.  It has been 5 years since I attended because I was teaching ESOL and not Teacher Cadets.  It was amazing to be able to reconnect with my CERRA colleagues; they were so excited to see me and welcomed me back with excitement!  The entire conference followed an All-Star Sports theme, and each day brought speakers, workshops, games, prizes, and more.  We heard from the spunky SC Teacher of the Year Jennifer Wise; we were all a bit more enthusiastic about teaching after her stories!  We also enjoyed words of wisdom from Coastal Carolina’s head baseball coach and the National Coach of the Year Gary Gilmore and watched a compilation of the winning moments of all the post-season games that led to the National Championship.  Both of these speakers had several characteristics in common:  dedication to teaching and coaching, commitment to students as individuals, hearts for service to others, and a love for God that guides their lives.  I am truly renewed and ready to get back to my students with a fresh perspective.

Review from David Marshall James: "I Loved Her in the Movies:  Memories of Hollywood's Legendary Actresses" by Robert J. Wagner, with Scott Eyman
R.J. Wagner's third book proves thoroughly devourable, like a box of chocolates filled with fancy truffles.
Indeed, it's a valentine to many of the cinema actresses he has known over the past-- can it be?-- 65-plus years.
There's also the occasional billet doux:  To Natalie Wood, naturally; to Jill St. John, certainly.  Then, there're his onetime costar Barbara Stanwyck, as well as Joan Crawford (!).  Just a fling with Miss Joan, mind you, but that's a turn-back-the-page-and-reread-it moment.
Speaking of Joan's, R.J. confesses he had it bad for Miss Collins, but her head had been turned by Warren Beatty (she claims to have his engagement ring, still, in the proverbial Vault), then Anthony Newley.
R.J. also had a thing for, but not a fling with, Lana Turner.  Interestingly, a partial portrait of La Lana seems to be gracing the cover.
Whew.  And we're not even past the hot fudge into the ice cream yet.  R.J. reels on and on, back to Norma Shearer's boudoir.  But:  It's not what you would think.
The memories include Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Bette Davis, Rosalind Russell, Sophia Loren, and Audrey Hepburn.
I like that they also include Irene Dunne, Joan Blondell, Dorothy Lamour, Ann Rutherford, Florence Henderson, and Claire Trevor.
It's when someone writes about other people that we learn the most about that someone.
Only two actresses with whom R.J. worked receive the "bite into it and put it back in the box" treatment.  Their first names are Raquel and Shelley.
Picture it:  R.J. Wagner walks up to you in a white dinner jacket, red carnation in the lapel.  What do you do?  "Melt like chocolate under the arc lights of Stage 18 at Warner Bros." would be an appropriate answer.
